The lead-in model in the new Cortina range offers outstanding value to the medium car buyer for whom economy is an important consideration. Engineered for a log reliable life, the basic Cortina nevertheless includes a tremendous list of safety and comfort features. All this, with economy too! Not just fuel economy but sensible service costs, low insurance, reasonable spare parts prices and high retained values.
Choice of 1300 economy engine, or the all new 1600 economy engine. The 1300 economy engine is available with 2 door or 4 door saloons. The 1600 economy engine is available with the 4 door saloon or estate car.
Cortina's elegant styling is emphasised by the clean, no-nonsense exterior trim. Black drip rails and all-black weather strips on front and rear screens. Black grille with argent surround and centre Ford oval badge. Lower down, the air intake below the front bumper has a black painted centre bar, and the rocker panels are black painted. Sturdy chrome bumpers protect the rectangular tungsten headlamps at the front and the large tail-lamp clusters, which incorporate reversing lamps.
The attractive styled road wheels are fitted with 165 SR x 13 radial ply tyres and have dual line servo-assisted brakes with big front discs and rear drums.
A drivers door mounted mirror gives safer overtaking, whilst the dipping rear view mirror and heated rear window give excellent normal rearward vision.
Inside the black fascia is a model of sensible design, incorporating the award winning "R module" instrumentation comprising speedometer,, odometer, fuel and temperature gauges, plus warning lights for indicators, main beam, oil pressure and alternator. The instruments have revised graphics to make them even easier to read, and they're easy to see through the new thick rim PVC covered steering wheel with safety steering column. Behind the wheel are the fingertip 3 lever controls for lights, two speed windscreen wipers, electric screen washers, direction indicators and horn.

In the centre of the fascia are the simple heater controls, illuminated for easy use at night. Below the heater, there's provision for a radio. There is of course a cigar lighter, also illuminated for night time use, and below it are the safety rocker switches for the heated rear window and hazard warning flashers - both standard features.
At the left side of the fascia, there's a useful glove box. And, at both ends of the facia, face level eyeball vents take care of all ventilation requirements. The last thing to mention on the facia is the rheostat control for varying the intensity of the illumination.
The interior is fully carpeted in practical black carpet, and the doors are fully trimmed. Front bucket seats are slide mounted. On 2 door models a relocated seat-tip lever makes entry and exit easier. The parchment vinyl headlining is complemented by parchment sun visors which are black-backed to reduce glare. The central hand brake has a black rubber gaiter.

The interior light at the front has its own switch or is automatically operated by the front door courtesy switches. The Cortina Estate Car also has a load compartment light operated by its own tailgate courtesy switch.
On 4 door models and estate cars, the rear doors have childproof locks to keep the smaller members of the family in their place. There is a grab handle for the front passenger and two coat hooks in the rear. On saloons the boot has a rubber mat, as has the load space in the estate version. The saloon's boot has a generous 11.8 cu ft effective luggage capacity, and the solid rear panel not only adds strength to the body but also makes it easier to judge loading the boot - and small items don't fall out! The Cortina Estate has a full 64 cu ft of space as a 2 seater, or 34 cu ft when all seats are occupied.
This then is the lead in model in the new Cortina range. The lowest priced Cortina, but with a high feature level and, like the other Cortina models, engineered with skill and care to give a long reliable life plus highly enjoyable driving.
