By 1976, styling improvements to the MKIII started to show the need for revision in the face of increased Continental and Japanese competition.
The response from Ford came in September 1976, with the introduction of the more sophisticated "square look" body styling of the MKIV Cortina. The new design featured an increased glass area, lower waistline and an integral front spoiler.
With firm control of the top selling slot, Cortina continued to be improved with the addition of V6 power from a 2.3 litre engine available in GL, Ghia and "S" (for Sport) models.

In September 1977, the Cortina line up was complemented by the 1.6 Ghia, in response to the needs of both private and business users who were looking to combine improved fuel economy with prestigious "Ghia" refinements.
The 1300L 2 door saloon priced at £2089.83 included £154.46 VAT and £148.79 car tax whereas the 2 litre Ghia Estate was £3394.75 of which £251.46 was VAT and £241.79 car tax.
